In this moment ... remembrance ...

As I reflect on Remembrance Day I keep recalling the words of Oscar Romero:

Peace is not the produt of terror or fear.
Peace is not the silence of cemeteries.
Peace is not the silence of violent repression.
Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all.
Peace is dynamism.
Peace is generosity.
It is right and duty.

Today is about remembering the cost of war and violence ... it is not about wrapping everything in a patriotic flag and blithely accepting a pro-militaristic agenda ... Today is about acknowledging the profound sacrifice an entire generation made counter the evil wrought by a tyrannt, and expressing our appreciation ... Today is about recommitting to a way of peace and challenging our leaders to stop glorifying the horrors of war ...

Today is about reclaiming Shalom as more than just the absence of war ...
