Every once in a while something happens that is just RIGHT.
This week's appointment of Dr Henry Morgentaler to the Order of Canada would apparently be one of those moments ... and today, CBC.ca has an article on the "division" this appointment has had on our so-called Just Society (click here to read the article) .
I was delighted to hear that Dr Morgentaler was FINALLY given our nation's highest civilian honour for the struggle, the achievement and the work that he has put into his crusade for the FREEDOM of CHOICE when it comes to women's reproductive rights. (I posted about this previously)
While personally I don't favour abortions, as one who will never bear a child himself, I don't feel it is my place, nor the place of any one else to interfer with the RIGHTS of women to decide for themselves such matters. Our responsibility as a civil society, something we Canadians take great pride in touting, is to ensure safe access to such procedures.
Doctor Morgentaler made this his life's mission, and he has more than his share of struggles in achieving it ... threats, violence, bombings ... all enacted under the banner of "Pro-Life" opponents who have been a tad off-base in their actions ...
So, one can (and WILL) agree with the appointment, and we've heard of a BC priest with a somewhat checkered past insisting he WILL return his Order of Canada in protest, but the bottom line is that THIS time, with THIS appointment, the Order of Canada has rewarded someone who willingly battled for the RIGHTS of Freedom and Choice for ALL CANADIANS.
I can think of no more honourable cause that FREEDOM, and today I personally can think of no more honourable Canadian to receive this honour that a survivor of the Nazi Holocaust, who championed FREEDOM by risking his safety and life.
Congratulations Dr Morgentaler - I'm proud to be a Canadian today thanks to YOU and your worthy cause !!
There is NO doubt in MY mind that you have EARNED this:
Never-ending 'shroom season
-
Back to mushrooms. As long as it keeps on raining*, there will always be
more mushrooms.
*Flat-tops on a mossy log.*
*Mycena sp.? Sprinkled over the moss...

In the 1800's in the USA, States also had "rights", as did many "whites" ... the right over property called "slaves". Since the US constitution gave them only partial "human" status, (used by the South so that that could have more representation in the Gov't, yet not giving that representation to Black Americans since the latter were not full "humans), a similar split in national conscience was then going on. Today the so-called "right" to human reproduction is a mere cover to say that we aren't sexually responsible, so we want the right to terminate the pregnancy. Did you ever actually look at the "pregnancy" being terminated? "It" has arms, eyes, toes, hair, a unique finger print. Nations today that allow abortion at large are diminishing natural growth rates. Most European nations today are dropping natural growth rates at alarming numbers, and so have to open their borders to whomever from wherever with whatever ethic they carry, in order to keep jobs filled. The fight for "women's rights" is a smoke screen that blinding the very fighters who believe in it.
I have been struggling with writing a comment to this blog. . I just can’t seem to find the right words to write. But I am going to give it a shot.
Ever since I saw the article in the paper and watched the news the other nite, I have had mixed feelings about the whole thing. While I have basically the same feelings as you do, I am torn by the women who use abortion as a birth control method. Not all people are meant to be parents, and there are the few that realize that and take precautions. But if the pregnancy happens by shear stupidity, why should they have an out? If you are old enough to have sex then you are old enough to deal with the ramifications if you don’t take the necessary precautions. There are many of people out there that can’t have children and would make wonderful parents.
On the other hand. If he had not done what he had to give women these rights, there probably would be a lot more dead women out there, by getting abortions done illegally and in deplorable conditions. As well, there would be more unwanted children, more children living in poverty, and probably more homeless children.
It makes sense to me that the last paragraph out weighs the first one. I too applaud this order of Canada.
