I've been reading a book by a Jewish author about living a useful and fulfilled life ... reflecting on a number of Biblical stories, he weaves a narrative that parallels much of what I've been reading in Tolle and Deide ... tonight though, I encountered a question that caused me pause ...
The author cited a major power outage in New York some years ago that illustrated what lies in a person's heart ... He noted that some people grabbed flashlights and started helping one another in the darkness, helping each other up stairs, into darkened buildings and across pitch black streets - generally being helpful ... while others took advantage of the situation to smash windows and steal from stores and homes ... he then mused, that perhaps we don't really know how we would react in such a situation until we're in it ... only when the power goes out and we find ourselves engulfed in darkness can we truly face the question "what will I do ?" ... and then live out the answer ...
It's an intriguing question ...
